[2005-02-18] mp3riot version 1.3 released
I have released a new version of mp3riot. Although a finished the codings before christmas, I had not time to update the manual. But now its done. The main new features are flexible sorting and grouping for all output formats.

[2004-10-08] mp3riot version 1.2 is out.
mp3riot version 1.2 is out. New features are serching for doublicate files by using md5 sums and an extension of the grouping function.

[2004-01-09] working progress on mp3riot version 1.2
Currently I am working on version 1.2 of mp3riot. There are some bugs in the xml-plylist output. I am also integreating a function to search for doublicate files, ignoring their filenames, by using message digests. This might be useful, because a lot of multimedia files have different filenames but the same content and quality.

[2003-07-29] New version of mp3riot / f2html released
I have renamed f2html into mp3riot and released the version 1.1. New features are random file selection (for playlists), output of xml and pls playlists, and renaming of files using id3tag information in a flexible way using templates.

[2003-05-07] f2html.pl: problems with old perl versions
It seems that f2html.pl has some problems with older perl versions, especially with the module getopt::long. So you have to upgrade to a newer version of perl. V 5.8.0 would be fine :)

[2003-03-21] f2html version 1.0 released
A brand new version of f2html is released. Changes are:
  • Fixed some smaller bugs
  • Removed option for fast sorting (not necessary any more)
  • Rebuild the internal data structure ompletely
  • Implemented selection of files by their modification time (younger and/or older than days from now)
  • Implemented grouping of files by string matching between group defninitions by various types
  • Implemented variable html-code dsefinitions and templates
  • Changed definition for string replacement
  • f2html.pl now comes with a new version of Info.pm from MP3-Info-1.02 by Chris Nandor
  • The use of the id3tag for sql and html output is now optional
  • Manpage is not upported any more.

[2003-03-14] f2html.pl version 0.9 released and section rootkit scanner added
This morning I have released the 0.9 version of f2html.pl. The focus of this version are two bug fixes. I have also started to continue the work on the 0.10 version that will be based on a new internal data structure needed to inplement new important features. I also opened a new section: rootkit scanner. But it is very rudimentary at the moment.

[2003-03-13] f2html: command line problem update
The problem with the command line options in f2html.pl seems to be a perl bug. If you use an abritary string as a first argument, then everything works fine.
So, to get the help, just type:
perl f2html.pl anystring --help
With other perl version, this problem might not occur.

[2003-03-13] f2html command line options bug solution
The problem was that the -s switch in the first line of the script consumes one argument. So another solution to the problem would be to remove this swicht from the first line of the script.

[2003-03-12] F2html.pl: problem with command line options
Today I discovered a problem with f2html.pl. Under perl 5.8.0 the command line options do not work. But everything works fine with perl 5.6.1. At the moment I do not know why. If someone has a clue, please contact me.

[2002-12-07] f2html.pl and image-gallery
Next week I will bring out a new version of f2html.pl. This version will have a rewritten internal data structure that is needed for the implementation of new options. Also, most of the short hand command line names for the options will be removed, so you will have to use the long names for the options. Additionally I will introduce a new section with funny and mostly computer related images.

[2002-11-22] f2html: status
I have rewritten the internal datastructure of f2html. The old functions seem to work now. I also have removed most of the short versions of options. For most of the options only the long version will be available. Now, I can start to implement important functions like grouping, html templates and so on. Grouping means that you can define groups of files to put togehter in one html file. Html templates means that you will be able to define you own html layout.

[2002-11-21] f2html: bug
'There is a small bug in f2html. It seems that the options-module can not differentiate between small and capital letters. But if you always use the long version of the options you are on the save site.

[2002-11-08] f2html.pl version 0.8 released
The new version of f2html.pl contains some code fixes, the usage of the replace option has changed, and two new option have been implemeted. With rename you can try to rename files using their id3tag. And with renameback you can rename them back using their original name. Greater changes and important new options are planned for the 0.9 version.

[2002-10-17] f2html.pl and pigsparty update
I have still no phone nor internet connection at home. So I found time to release a new version of f2html.pl. I fixed a lot of bugs and implemented basic ogg vorbis support. I have also started an other project called pigsparty. The idea of the project is to bring snort and iptables together.

The second alpha version of the revised Mozilla Public Licensehas been posted; the text has been annotated to make it relatively easy to see what has been changed. "The most significant change in this draft is the patent language. We have made it easier to read but also, we hope, better at protecting communities who choose to use the MPL. It should also have the side effect of making the license Apache-compatible, allowing projects licensed under the next MPL release to include Apache-licensed code in their code bases."

The Mozilla Labs Gaming project has announced its existence. "Modern Open Web technologies introduced a complete stack of technologies such as Open Video, audio, WebGL, touch events, device orientation, geo location, and fast JavaScript engines which make it possible to build complex (and not so complex) games on the Web. With these technologies being delivered through modern browsers today, the time is ripe for pushing the platform. And what better way than through games?"The project is starting with a competitionto see who can build the best web-based game.

Watching Ubuntu and Fedora development is something like watching episodes of Iron Chef: Given roughly the same ingredients and the same amount of time, the two projects produce vastly different dishes. The Fedora 14 and Ubuntu 10.10 release cycle is particularly pronounced in this regard, with Ubuntu's focus largely on refining improvements from 10.04 and Fedora introducing major changes to the infrastructure. Subscribers can click below for the full story from this week's Distributions page.

Your editor had the good fortune to be able to attend the first LinuxCon Brazil event, held in São Paulo. There were a number of interesting talks to be seen, presented by speakers from Brazil and far beyond. This article will cover three in particular (by Jane Silber, Vinod Kutty, and Jon 'Maddog' Hall) which were interesting as a result of the very different views they gave on how Linux users work with their systems.

The 1.10.0 release of the Cairo graphics library has finally been released. "One of the more interesting departures for cairo for this release is the inclusion of a tracing utility, cairo-trace. cairo-trace generates a human-readable, replayable, compact representation of the sequences of drawing commands made by an application. This can be used to inspecting applications to understand issues and as a means for profiling real-world usage of cairo."The profiling feature has evidently been used to improve performance in a number of areas. There is also improved printing support, better 16-bit buffer support, and better use of hardware acceleration.

Martin Graesslin looksat problems with the interaction between KWin and some graphics drivers. "Now that I have explained all our checks we did to ensure a smooth user experience, I want to explain how it could happen that there are regressions in 4.5. In 4.5 we introduced two new features which require OpenGL Shaders: the blur effect and the lanczos filter. Both are not hard requirements. Blur effect can easily be turned off by disabling the effect and the lanczos filter is controlled by the general effect level settings which is also used for Plasma and Oxygen animations. Both new features check for the required extensions and get only activated iff the driver claims support for it. So everything should be fine, shouldn't it? Apparently not when it comes to the free graphics drivers (please note and remember: we do not see such problems with the proprietary NVIDIA driver!)."(Thanks to Jos Poortvliet)

Fedora will be holding a Systemd test dayon September 7, 2010. "This week's Test Day, which will take place on Tuesday 2010/09/07 rather than the more usual Thursday, is on systemd, so it's a very important one! It will also serve at least two functions: as usual, the testing will help us to improve the code so that if it does go into the final Fedora 14 release it will work as well as possible, but the Fedora steering committee will also be using the results of the Test Day to help inform their final decision as to whether to go ahead with systemd for the Beta and final release, or whether to revert to upstart. So there's a lot riding on this Test Day."
